Pirot, with its area of 1232 km2, is one of the largest Municipality in Serbia. It is situated in the south-east part of Serbia, on the international motorway E-80, near the border with Bulgaria. River Nisava runs through the valley of Pirot. Pirot is from all sides surrounded by mountains, where is dominate Stara Planina, which peak Midzor is 2169m high.
The climate is moderately continental.
The municipality area is very well connected by road and railroad network with other parts of Serbia and the neighbouring Bulgaria.
